Bogs Adornado is a prolific former professional basketball player and coach in the Philippines. He is one of the pioneers of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and one of the league’s Greatest Players. Amateur career
The Bogs Adornado’s history in basketball started when he was six years old and continued during his stint with the Glowing Goldies of the University of Santo Tomas. Under coach Rogelio Serafico, he played the central role and was also a great shooter. Adornado was one of the team’s best players during the school’s stint with the University Athletic Association of the Philippines or the UAAP. During the 1967-68 season, he led the UST team to the championship in the UAAP.
In addition to his stint with the UST team, Adornado was also a member of the RP Youth team, who attended the inaugural Asian Youth Basketball Championship in South Korea. Under coach Ignacio Ramos, Adornado teamed up with Rosario Martires, Marte Samson, Ernesto Estrada, and Manny Paner to win the championship. From this point, Adornado became a regular on the international Philippine basketball teams, including the Asian Games and the Olympics. Adornado was the youngest player in the country’s basketball team in the 1972 Munich Games and was also a key player when the country won the gold medal in the 1973 Asian Basketball Confederation Championship.
PBA career
Bogs Adornado was one of the original players to join the Philippine Basketball Association in 1975. This Filipino former basketball player started his career with the Crispa team under coach Baby Dalupan. On April 27, 1975, he made his professional debut and scored 32 points to lead the team against Tanduay. With the help of the other best Filipino basketball players, like Atoy Co and Philip Cezar, Adornado and the rest of Crispa won the 1975 Invitational. He was also the first PBA Most Valuable Player in 1975, a feat he repeated in 1976.
In 1976, the Crispa team won the All-Filipino Conference. In one of the games, Adornado scored 24 points and was the first player to reach the 2,000-point mark. However, in the 1976 Open Conference, he suffered a knee injury and was forced to take a leave of absence. He came back in 1978, but playing time was limited since Freddie Hubalde took his spot. While Adornado was recovering and gaining back his form, the Crispa team won another championship in the All Filipino Conference of 1979.
In 1980, the Crispa team released Bogs Adornado for U/Tex Wranglers for Php 100,000. In his new team, the basketball player teamed up with Lim Eng Beng, Aaron James, and Glenn McDonald to lead the team against Toyota for the championship. After his stint with the U/Tex Wranglers, he joined the Great Taste, Shell, and Hill Bros in 1987.
